Royal Navy GW14 Convoy Escort Design

The Convoy Escort design of GW14 described having 3" Guns side by side on the front and the 40mm Bofors guns on each corner for maximum coverage. Missile stowage also increased from the previous designs 60 missiles to the usual 90 of the first series. I fortunately have the papers describing the design including armour thickness as well.

The design had the following characteristics:

Engines: 30.000shp, Steam Turbines (Probably English Electric Y100), 2 shafts
Range: Unknown probably 15-21.900km at 22km/h (8-12.900nm at 12knots)
Speed: 43km/h (24knots)
Armour: 51mm Deck over Machinery and 38mm over Magazines, 51mm Belt over Machinery and Magazines (Missile and Guns)

2x2 3"/70 (76mm/70) QF Mk N1 AA Guns,
4x2 40mm/70 OQF Mk XI AA Guns,
1x2 GWS.1 Sea Slug SAM

GW14A version which was proposed later (in may 1954 rather november 1953) then the rest, was an attempt to exchange the Type 982,83 and 960 Radars with the gigantic Type 984 3D air search and fighter direction radar to provide much better capabilities for the escort vessels in fleet and convoy escort roles. This large radar which was only installed aboard the 3 post war British Carriers, the HMS Eagle, Hermes and Victorious, though the much earlier Large cruisers and many later GW designs featured this very large radar set.
Otherwise the design remains the same with only a minor increase in displacement of a mere 70tons.
