Thornycroft-White-Yarrow Destroyer Design 1947

The major shipbuilders of the RN actively seeked foreign customers to build ships for their navy both before WW1 and in the interbellum era between the wars, but WW2 halted this progress as every ship was needed for the RN to defend it's trade routes and shores. But as the war ended and experience gained together with the massive disarmament left the shipyards without work apart from scrapping the ships they previously built. None the less in the peace time foreign exports again seen as an opportunity to maintain ship building capacity, employ skilled workers and gather income. On this basis the combined firms of Thornycroft, White and Yarrow produced this destroyer design for a potential South American buyer, precisely Argentina. The wartime large L class destroyers was used as a basis and introducing alternating engine rooms with UNIT machinery arrangement (One engine "unit" included the boilers, turbines, diesel generators and other machinery) meant that the design grow to a much larger ship which in turn provided spacious accommodation and future upgrade and modernization spaces for the ship. Interestingly this was the only design which featured the 4,7" Mk IX gun in Mk XX mountings while the guns were the best British destroyer weapons the mounting itself was marginally better then previous DP mounts a critical error in the experience of the Air warfare of WW2.

The design had these characteristics:
