Project 1126 Air Defence Missile Cruiser

In order for the Soviet Red navy to effectively hunt and destroy the new Nuclear Submarines of USN, the ASW ships needed an escort armed with long range missiles to defend the surface groups against air strikes. This cruiser design born to serve that purpose. This is the earliest version from around 1956-58 equipped with long range but on the other hand rather large missiles. For close range and for anti surface defence the 57mm Twin gun turrets to provide assistance.
Note the many radar sets and their towers for to use of the missiles!

A different layout version of the Project 1126 Air Defence Missile Cruiser design of the Soviet Red Navy. Main changes are the missiles, the SA-N-1 Goa is replaced with SA-N-3 Goblet, different main radar set, improved ASW rocket mortars and a reduced number of torpedoes. The design dates back to around 1960.

One of the later versions of the design, and could be accepted into production. Change again only in armament and radars. No torpedo tubes and changed the SA-1 Guild SAM to SA-4 Ganef SAM, other than this minor superstructure change compared to version 2.

The final version of the Project 1126 Air Defence Missile Cruiser design. A Truly all missile armed air defence ship for the Soviet Red navy. Flush deck design, heavier ASW armament, all guns and torpedoes are replaced with missile launchers, with the final armament as follows:
