Design 1911 Coastal Battleship Variants

After the construction of the Oscar II coastal battleship finished there seems to be a few years of peace regarding the expansion of the Swedish Navy. But after the emergence of the new kind of battleship the British HMS Dreadnought which brought herself the extinction of the old kind of battleships and initiated a new race of capital ship construction around the world especially in the neighbours of Sweden: Germany and Russia, the Swedisgh admirality seen the the current coastal battleships will soon became obsolete and of limited use against the rapid technological development this new arms race bought. To protect the coastal waters as well as the shores of the mainland, the admiralty initiated a new design process to aquire stronger coastal defence vessels which eventually led to the Sverige class Coastal Defence battleships. But before this new class was born there was a number of preliminary design studies, including the 1911 proposals armed with 305mm cannons in various numbers (3x2 ,2x2, 3x1 etc) and revolutionary for a surface warship, diesel engines. The strong armament, lack of smoke and small size of these designs meant that they would be very difficult to detect. The low silhouette of the hull only broke by the single tripod mast for gunnery control and no apparent funnel gave these proposals an almost Monitor like appearance. None the less the good armour and strong armament would had made these ships a formidable enemy trying to invade the coast lines of Sweden in case of a war!
The layout of the main turrets reminiscent of the Russian capital ships which was required to keep the draught of the hull not so deep, and the placement of the secondary 105mm guns suggest an expected engagement from a defensive / evasive view where most the main turrets facing the aftermost angles possible hence the st turret have the guns on top rather the second as expected in a high seas fleet capital ship.

The design had the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 114 (wl) x 18 x 6 meters
Displacement: 6.250tons (standard)
Armour: 200mm Belt at Machinery, 150mm at Magazines, 30mm Deck, 40mm Slopes
Engines: 14.000shp Hesselman Diesel Engines, 2 shafts
Speed: 37km/h (20knots)
Range 5.900km at 26km/h
Armaments:
3x2 305mm/45 Bofors m/10 Cannons,
6x1 105mm/50 Bofors m/10 Guns,
2x1 37mm/37 Bofors m/98B Guns
2x1 457mm Underwater Torpedo Tubes

Version 2 of this 1911 coastal battleship design sacrifices one twin 305mm turret and replaces the 105mm secondary guns with turreted 152mm ones on the same hull, empathising a different approach to coastal defence of more rapid firing guns against smaller adversaries up to cruiser size. The freed up space achieved by the removal of the 2nd twin 305mm turret allowed a larger Diesel powerplant to be installed and thus increase the speed by 4km/h to 41km/h which was around the standard fleet speed of most of the blue water navies around the globe. The different layout and secondary armament also meant a moderate change to the upper deck works and superstructure layout. Essentially version 1 was designed to fight on more equal terms agaisnt larger capital ships, Version 2 increases the striking power against smaller vessels.
