The Catalina

The Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying Boat of the United States Navy Air Force. During the war, these aircrafts were used in anti-submarine warfare, maritime bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions and cargo transports. Their large fuel volume and flying boat design made them ideal for such missions on the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, though to their rather large size, slow speed, lack of agility and moderate armament meant easier targets for enemy planes but their blue/white camouflage made them harder to spot both from bellow or above. Non the less if a stranded pilot saw such plane and the plane's crew too saw the pilot he was sure that rescue is under way and saved from drowning.
