Ersatz Zenta Johann Fiala Versions

In 1913 the Admiralty of the KuK Kriegsmarine given order to design a new class of cruisers to replace the ageing and obsolete scout cruisers of the Zenta class which were to be ordered in the 1914 naval programme.
By early mid 1914 when the programme was accepted, several plans were presented by the three well respected Naval Architects of the Navy: Franz Pitzinger, Silvius Morin (These two designed the Ersatz Monarch class Battleships) and Johann Silvius.
While these designs differed from each other, they had a few common characteristics, namely the approximate 4800tons displacement, similar size, light armour of 38/20mm Deck/Belt and 56km/h (30knots) max speed.

These cruisers were fast heavily armed with numerous though smaller calibre guns and lightly armoured for their size. They carried on the role of the previous scout cruiser tasks in an improved and much more modern design.

Johann Fiala's designs feature various arrangements of funnels suggesting different machinery layouts and powerplants (all coal, mixed coal and oil or all oil) and changes in various superstructure and deck elements accordingly. Their data as well as armament remains the same except for Design IIb which was described as a Yacht Cruiser.
The designs had the following charactesristics:
Dimensions: 151,2 (wl), 153,1 (oa) x 13,7 x 6,4m
Displacement: 4.950tons (standard), 5.611tons (full load)
Armour: 38mm Deck, 20mm Belt
Engines: 40.000shp AEG Steam Turbines, 2 shafts
Speed: 56km/h (30knots)
Range: 7.400km at 30km/h (4.000nm at 16knots)
Armament:
14x1 12cm/45 Skoda K14 Guns (11x1 on Design IIb)
2x1 45cm Torpedoes
On Design Ia the torpedoes seems to be located in a below deck but above water mounts while the others feature deck mounted centre rotating ones.
Design II shows alternative arrangements for a full cruiser or as a yacht cruiser with accommodations on the quarterdeck and reduced armaments.

Originally 3 ships to be built by the Hungarian Ganz-Danubius Yards at Fiume to one of the Fiala designs, but the war prevented their construction.

Later after a year and half of war experiences shown (especially the loss of the German Crusier SMS Emden) that those cruisers which had smaller (10cm / 4") calibre yet numerous guns was no match to a 150mm (6") armed cruiser, no matter how well the guns served.
This led in 1916 to redesign the plans of these cruisers to these specifications:
Main armament changes to 2x1 19cm/42 Skoda K03 and 6-8x 15cm/50 Skoda K10 guns
Added AA armament of 4x1 9cm/45 (88mm) Skoda K16 guns
and an enlarged 2x1 53cm Torpedo weaponry.
Armour too would had been significantly improved reaching 127-150mm in thickness
Radius of action sufficient to permit attacks in the Mediterranean.
Calculations showed that the changes in armament, armour and range would result in an almost doubled tonnage in displacement of 7300-8400tons
While the hulls of these cruisers were excellent and some calculations show that they could accept the extra weight and a weight breakdown of the Revised design exist with 8640tons the designers feel that the original design could not be modified to this extent.
