Kongo Replacement Design 35K Variants

This is the smallest of the 35.000ton series of Kongo Replacement proposals from Hiraga Yuzuru. While there are no sketch drawing found of the layout of the secondary and main armament, their number as well as armour and various data I was able to find in the Hiraga archives of the Library of the University of Tokyo. It is somewhat shorter and not as wider then the final versions chosen for further development. With only 9 cannons in 3 triple turrets there was more weight could be allocated for secondary armament and armour.

The design had the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 228,6 (wl) x 30,5 x 8,53 m
Displacement: 35.000tons (standard)
Armour: 356mm Belt at 20degrees incline, 305mm Slopes and 178mm Deck
Engines: around 80.000shp, 4 shafts
Speed: 48km/h (26knots)
Armaments:
3x3 410mm/50 Type 90 Cannons
8x2 140mm/55 Type 88 Guns (No info on actual number and layout)
4x2 12cm/45 10th Year Type DP-AA Guns
4x1 40mm Type HI AA guns (I've added it to the design)
2x1 61cm Underwater Torpedo Tubes
2-3x Seaplanes (Nakajima E4N)

Variant B or the 10 gun armed version is one of the two well documented design proposals of the Kongo Replacement design series and such it is also one of the two designs having a sketch drawing as well.
It was used as a basis for the final Design X aka the final to be built version, though a different layout was chosen both for the main, secondary and AA armament.
On this design the true compactness of the series can be noticed. The boats are stored as close as possible to the main turrets and the ones on the upper deck are protected behind blast shields. The main armament's firing arcs were excellent, 300 degrees for all turrets and the layout of the secondary 14cm gun turrets were well calculated so all turrets could fire in every direction: forward, broadsides and aft hence the higher and higher locations as the turrets goes closer to the centre of the ship. To provide more space for the innermost twin 14cm gun turrets, one set of DP-AA guns were moved aft, around the aftermost conning tower and the quadropod around funnel mast too was replaced by a simple pole mast aft.

The design had the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 231,65 (wl) x 32 x 9,14 m
Displacement: 35.000tons (standard)
Armour: 356mm Belt at 20degrees incline, 305mm Slopes and 216mm Deck
Engines: 80.000shp, 4 shafts
Speed: 48km/h (26knots)
Armaments:
2x4,1x2 410mm/50 Type 90 Cannons
6x2 140mm/55 Type 88 Guns
4x2 12cm/45 10th Year Type DP-AA Guns
4x1 40mm Type HI AA guns (I've added it to the design)
2x1 61cm Underwater Torpedo Tubes
2-3x Seaplanes (Nakajima E4N)

The most heavily armed among the Kongo Replacement designs was the "C" proposal. This version feature an outstanding 12x 410mm cannons in three quadruple turrets! This extensive armament was came at a cost as this proposal was the slowest of them all, as well the most lightly armoured as well! A truly Japanese warship, sacrificing protection for armament.

The design had the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 231,65 (wl) x 32 x 9,14 m
Displacement: 35.000tons (standard)
Armour: 318mm Belt at 20degrees incline, 229mm Slopes and 178mm Deck
Engines: Unknown, probably around 52.000shp, 2-4 shafts
Speed: 43km/h (23knots)
Armaments:
3x4 410mm/50 Type 90 Cannons
4x2,8x1 140mm/55 Type 88 Guns (No info on actual number and layout)
4x2 12cm/45 10th Year Type DP-AA Guns
4x1 40mm Type HI AA guns (I've added it to the design)
2x1 61cm Underwater Torpedo Tubes
2-3x Seaplanes (Nakajima E4N)
